Blatant Racism at Johns Hopkins University. Any Thoughts?

Ok, so im a sophmore at Johns Hopkins University in baltimore, i.e. one of the major research and medical institutions in the entire world.

On saturday, the Sigma Chi fraternity posted on facebook (college myspace) an extremely racist party invite called "Halloween in the hood." In the invitation, the social chair of the party writes that baltimore is an "HIV pit" and refered to blacks as "scallywhops, hoodrats, and skig skags." Infront of the party house Sigma Chi hung a skeleton that was meant to resemble a black person.

The whole school right now is an uproar.

The NAACP of baltimore are also involved.

What do you guys think?

Blatant Racism at Johns Hopkins University. Any Thoughts?
I think that those whitebred mfers have nothing to do with the true value of JHU. They are just there to host the lacrosse boys and the laxstitutes, then have their daddy's get them jobs. It's strange when these things happen - b/c all those boys think that way, seldom does one idiot every expose the thoughts. But it really shows you what's JUST beneath the surface.
Reply:I think that was pretty stupid.
Reply:Two students were murdered on the Hopkins Homewood campus by community troublemakers.

The frat boys, in blatant and completely ignorant poor taste, exploited the victims of these murders and overreacted. They will be dealt with by Hopkins officials and whoever regulates fraternities at Hopkins.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the incident does not mean that a racist attitude exists at Hopkins. The media led off with the Hopkins story followed by the Duke lacrosse player story - another example of opportunist politicians (Durham County DA exploiting race divides for political benefit). Fortunatelty, there is no political benefit to be had in the Hopkins situation other than dealing with a bunch of perpetually ignorant frat boys.

Had I attended that party - I would have yanked down the hanging skeleton and exchanged harsh words with those ****** *******

Whether the frat boys were poking fun at the "Africanization" of popular culture - I don't like the "Atlanta" lifestyle but I'm not going to hang a black person in effigy because I don't like it. I'm not going on a website and spewing comments like "HIV pit." Those students should not attend Hopkins if they feel their safety is compromised by living on an urban campus - one which has gentrified over the last decade but more work remains.
Reply:I have no idea. All I know is the little bit you posted. There are usually several sides to a story. Sometimes 1 of those sides turns out to be right.
Reply:The Sigma Chi fraternity will not survive in the northeast if they continue perpetuate biogrty openly. The young men have the right to free speech and opinion, however, when their actions take place in a univeristy, the consequences will be magnified. Johns Hopkins is a wonderful university, but they failed miserably in adaquately maintaining social peace when they couldn't keep offensive flyers from going up and addressing the problem before the "Halloween in the hood" party. The campus is outraged, and they should be. In the future, a system detailing restrictions on greek life and activities will have to be implemented and/or improved if it already exists. Sigma Chi embaressed Johns Hopkins as an institution of higher learning.
Reply:That's very bad!
Reply:Basically, some people are scum bags. I can't tell you to ignore it, but, sometimes one must "turn the other cheek."
Reply:I'll have to check this out for myself....something this big should have been on the news and it wasn't.

Sorry but this sounds suspicious.
Reply:I think they have a right to throw any kind of party they want.

I am sick of the africanization of popular culture just like many of the frat boys are too. Sad truth of it is, what the party was satirically representing is all too often reality in Baltimore, Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, Detroit, St Louis etc etc etc.

But then again OJ was inocent from the git go....
